How much does a shoulder replacement cost? Patients often ask, "How much will my surgery cost?" You would think it should be an easy question to answer. Unfortunately, it is not and is one of the biggest problems with our current health system. Let's take a shoulder replacement surgery as an example. When a patient has surgery, his insurance company will be accountable to the surgeon, anesthesiologist and hospital. Each of them is a separate charge. The amount paid can actually vary by the insurance company depending on the deal they negotiated. Anthem could pay less than United that pays more than Aetna, etc. As a general estimate of the balls stadium, a replacement shoulder surgery will result in the hospital being paid 20k and the surgeon about $1,500. The patient can then pay a portion of that burden depending on his particular insurance plan and his deductible and co-paid. If a patient has a 10% co-payment and maximum deductible of 5k per year, his surgery would cost them approximately 2,500. If your deductible max for the year is $1k, you could pay $1k. There are some interesting points that are often misunderstood as the difference between charges and payments. A hospital can "charge" anything they want for a service, but they only receive the payment that has been negotiated with the insurance company. For example, they can charge $100.000 for a shoulder replacement but when the hospital sits to negotiate with the insurance company, they will agree on a payment of about 20k. I often read articles in newspapers and magazines about the high cost of health in the USA and they like to quote things like a Tylenol cost $50. Unfortunately, that's not a precise presentation. A hospital can "load" fifty dollars for the Tylenol but that is not what is being paid, and in many cases nothing is paid for the Tylenol because it is included in the general fee. For example, if you have a shoulder replacement in Virginia Beach the hospital is not paid for every Tylenol, antibiotic and chicken dinner. In most cases, they are paid a flat rate independently. A second point is that most of the spending on medical care goes to hospitals not the doctor. Shoulder replacement surgery is a good example of that. The surgeon receives approximately $1,500 while the hospital receives about $20,000. In the future, efforts to reduce the cost of orthopaedic surgery procedures will focus on moving surgeries outside hospitals and in surgery centers. The cost of a shoulder replacement in a surgery center can reduce the charges by almost half. In the past this was not a big problem for patients because their insurance company paid most of the bill, but now with high deductibles and co-paid plans these charges are being transferred to patients. As a result, there is now demand from consumers for cheaper options and the market is responding. So when I ask your doctor, "How much will my surgery cost?", don't be surprised with the blank look. The question is hard to answer without asking many other questions such as: what is your insurance, what is your deductible and co-paid, you are doing surgery at the hospital or surgery center, ....... and the list continues. Let us hope that in the future we will be more able to answer these simple questions. You could also enjoy... Medicare cover shoulder replacement surgery? Your shoulder is a flexible joint that is highly susceptible to injury and wear. A seriously damaged shoulder could affect your quality of life. Even so, replacement surgery of the shoulder is usually classified as elective. Because Medicare does not usually cover elective surgeries, you may be worried that you will have to live with pain or pay for surgery outside your pocket. But Medicare will actually pay a portion of the costs if your doctor states that shoulder replacement surgery is medically necessary in your specific case. You may need shoulder replacement surgery to repair your shoulder or to reduce further damage to the joint. Your doctor will need to certify that your surgery is necessary to cure or prevent the continued damage caused by a disease, such as . This doctor must be registered and approved by Medicare. Some common types of shoulder surgeries include:Next, let's see what's covered under each part of Medicare. If your open shoulder replacement is medically necessary, a part of the cost. part of . Part A will also cover any medication or therapy you receive during your stay in a hospital, , or rehabilitation center. But it's important to know that there are limits for how long Medicare will cover a stay in any kind of placement facility. Part of Medicare B coverage Shoulder surgery can also be done arthroscopically. This type of surgery is minimally invasive and is usually performed in an outpatient hospital or independent clinic. If you have an arthroscopic shoulder replacement, your doctor will make a small incision on your shoulder and place a small camera there. Through another small incision, the surgeon will repair or replace parts of your shoulder. If your arthroscopic shoulder replacement surgery is medically necessary, part of the cost. is the other part of original Medicare. Part B also covers these articles and services, if necessary: Medicare Part C Coverage If you have (Medicare Advantage), your plan will cover all expenses covered by original Medicare (parts A and B). Part of Medicare Coverage D Any prescription medication to take after surgery, such as pain medicine, will be covered by . Part D is the optional prescription drug coverage offered through Medicare. Each Party Plan D includes a form. This is a list of medications that the plan covers and the percentage of coverage you can expect. Medigap Coverage If you have original Medicare, you might also have a plan. Depending on your plan, Medigap can cover some of the remaining costs outside your pockets for your shoulder replacement surgery. This may include your co-payments, co-insurance and deductible. Medigap generally covers drug copayments through Part D. Note, however, that most of the plans are the premium of Part B. It may be difficult to estimate your exact costs outside the box before your procedure. Your doctor's billing office should be able to give you a written estimate of what you can expect. This usually includes a range of potential costs, based on services that may require during and immediately after the procedure. Original Medicare Expenditures You may expect, even if you have Medicare. These include:Medicare Part C costs If you have Medicare Part C, your costs will vary depending on the type of plan you have. Your insurer can give you specific coverage and co-payment details in advance. Typically, you can expect to pay some form of copayment. No matter what type of plan Part C has, it is legally required that your plan covers at least as much as original Medicare. This includes the costs of outpatient or outpatient surgery. Part D Medicare Expenses If you have Medicare Part D, your costs differ depending on your plan. You are most likely to have some copayment costs for any prescription medication to you. Medication costs are set by the form and level system of your plan. Your plan provider may let you know what to expect to pay for each medication in advance. To get the most accurate results, ask your doctor for the exact name of the procedure or code for that type of surgery. Before the Procedure The first step is to ensure that you are healthy enough to undergo shoulder replacement surgery. Several weeks before the date of surgery, your doctor will schedule a physical exam to evaluate your heart and overall health. At that time, your doctor may recommend that you stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners. Early surgery can be stressful for many people. Try to relax as much as possible and sleep well the night before. The Day of Procedure Your doctor will notify you when you need to stop eating and drinking before surgery. If you take daily medicines in the morning, ask your doctor if you should take them on the day of the procedure. If you are having open surgery, you should be prepared to spend several days in the hospital. Bring anything that makes you feel more comfortable, like a good book to read, your phone and a phone charger. An hour before the procedure, an anesthesiologist will evaluate you. He will also meet with his surgeon, who will explain the procedure in depth. Use this time to ask any questions you have. The amount of time required for replacement surgery of the shoulder varies, but usually takes 2 to 3 hours. You will wake up in a recovery room, where you will stay for a period of time. If your surgery was done with a patient, you will be taken to your room after spending several hours in recovery. If the surgery was done outpatiently, you'll need someone to pick you up after you get fired. After the procedure As with any surgery, you can expect some pain or discomfort. Your doctor will prescribe pain medications to help. It may be instructed to take your medication at specific times or before your level of pain increases. You can also be told to apply ice in the area. You will be discharged with your arm in a sling, which you can tell is used for several weeks. Physical therapy often begins immediately, sometimes even on the day of the procedure. Using the shoulder as indicated will help you gain mobility faster. Your doctor will give you a prescription to continue physical therapy as long as necessary Your shoulder and arm will start to improve slowly. Within 2 to 6 weeks, you can expect to feel and see significant improvements and can resume many of the activities of daily life. It may take longer to drive a car or play sports, however. You may not be able to carry heavy packages for several months. It may also take 6 months or more before you have full mobility on your shoulder. A shoulder replacement may last for . Unless you have an injury that requires immediate repair, such as a broken or fractured shoulder bone, your doctor may recommend to test alternatives to surgery first. Cortisone injections Cortisone shots can be used to relieve pain and swelling in the shoulder joint. They are usually given in a doctor's office and should be given by a Medicare approved doctor to be covered. Most of the plans of Part D and Part C cover cortisone injections. Other parts of your bill, such as administrative costs, can be covered by Part B.Physical therapy Physical therapy can help with joint pain, mobility and stabilization. Medically needed physical therapy sessions are covered by Medicare Part B, provided you have a prescription from a Medicare-approved doctor. You should also use a physical therapist approved by Medicare. Pain relievers Pain prescription drugs are covered by most of Part D's and Part C's plans. Part C plans also cover over-the-counter medicines for pain. Stem cell therapy This treatment can be recommended for partial tendon or muscle tears. It can also be recommended for cartilage damage. But it is not currently approved by the FDA, which means it is not covered by Medicare. Last medical review on June 18, 2020Read this following
